What to do when your phone accidentally falls into water

Published

on

No matter how careful or cautious we are, accidents are bound to happen or occur every now or then because there are situations and circumstances that are simply beyond our control.

One device or gadget that we all handle with extreme care is the mobile phone. Our phones are somewhat fragile and a drop on the floor or in water could damage or cause them to malfunction.

Unless you are making a review video or trying out a waterproof phone out of curiosity, no one intentionally drops their phone in water.

So in the event that your phone accidentally falls or drops in water, maybe at the beach, home, or the workplace, what are some of the quick steps or things you can do to save the phone from permanent damage?

1. Turn your phone off immediately.

Running an electrical charge through any wet electrical circuit is bound to cause problems, thanks to water’s famous conductivity. But wetting an off-circuit is nowhere near as bad as wetting an active one. And just because an electrical device gets wet doesn’t mean it’s immediately destroyed.

2. For salt-water, beer, and other liquids: Wash the phone with a damp cloth.

Yes, this means getting your phone wet again. But saltwater is corrosive and will definitely damage your phone if not removed. Most smartphones these days should be able to cope with a damp cloth. Just dry it off again immediately.

3. Take out removable parts.

If you can, remove the SIM-card and the micro-SD card. And if you have the kind of phone that allows battery removal, do that too. While you’re doing this, be careful not to tap or shake your phone as you could be moving liquid around inside it.

4. Dry it with a soft towel.

You can also use a paper towel or cloth but make sure it’s gentle and lint-free. Be very careful not to move any water into cracks, crevices, or ports. You can also use your towel to dry any parts you were able to remove like the SIM-card, micro-SD card, and battery.

  • Don’t insert the towel inside the charging port.
  • Don’t insert any other objects inside the charging port. Like cotton swabs.
  • Don’t press any keys or buttons on your phone.
  • Don’t shake, tap or bang the phone.
  • Don’t put a fan on it or blow on it.
  • Don’t charge the phone. Even if you have a wireless charging mat.
  • Don’t dry your phone using an external heat source. Like, say, a hairdryer.

5. Place your phone on a towel in a dry area.

You’ve reached the ‘wait and see’ part of this journey. The most important thing now is to leave your phone alone to get dry.

6. Wait until it’s dry to switch it on again.

The standard length of time recommended in this situation is one to two days.

7. Monitor for quirks.

Once your phone is dry it could go on working just fine. Or it might go on working, but with some strange new glitches. Keep a watchful eye over the next few days and test its performance on key tasks like playing music, taking photos, etc. If you do notice problems, you may have to get it repaired or replaced.

4 ways to make money online

Published

on

By

We live in a digital age, everything, be it business, school, markets, or recreation is moving online or going virtual. With this increased pressure and activity on the internet or online, many opportunities or avenues have been created to make money.

To illustrate, out of the over 7billion people on earth, 4.66 billion, constituting about 59% of the total population were active users of the internet by October 2020, data from statista.com revealed.

So imagine 4.66 billion people online surfing the internet and looking for goods and services. It is indeed a pool of money. As mentioned earlier, there are a lot of opportunities to make money online like the selling of goods, creating of content (video, text, audio), online surveys, forex trading and so many more, but we are just going to consider four(4) of these numerous opportunities.

  1. Monetize your website: If you have a website or blog with great and unique content, you can monetize it by showing ads from ad networks or selling advertising space on your blog to advertisers. This is one of the easiest and fastest ways to make some cool cash online. The best ad network and one I would recommend is Google Adsense, they have the best and highest payouts. All you need to do is to make sure that your blog adheres to all their policies, create an account, and then submit your website for review and approval. Once your blog is approved, you can start displaying ads and make some money depending on your traffic.
  2. Create a Youtube channel: You may have realized that a lot of people are creating Youtube channels and uploading tutorials, and entertaining content there. They don’t do that just for fun, it’s actually a very lucrative venture, depending on how good your content is. The ads you see while you are on Youtube is how these content creators get paid. Youtube is Google-owned, so you also need Adsense for that.
  3. Become a social media influencer: The hours you spend on social media can be beneficial if you are business-minded. People with large followings on the various social media platforms get endorsement and advertising deals to advertise or make a product appeal to their followers. You can also take advantage and garner mass followings on social media, become an influencer, and make some cash off advertisements and promotions.
  4. Freelance work: Do you have a specific skill or something that you are very good at? It could be Graphic designing, programming, writing, etc. There are so many freelance jobs out there that require simple skills or just time that someone else might not have. And the best thing about freelancing is that you can work for clients around the world with just an internet connection from home. So take advantage of this opportunity and look out for freelance jobs online.

How to write the perfect application letter for a job

Published

on

By

Finding a job is one of the most difficult tasks in life. With the help of technology though, most companies who are hiring can use various platforms to advertise a vacancy or job opening.

However, due to the increase in the unemployment rate, many people would seize such an opportunity to apply for the position. How can you ensure though that your letter would be among the shortlist, or ultimately be the one to be considered for the job?

Application letters no doubt play a vital role in whether you would be considered for a job or not, thus we have gone through the pain to find the best way to write the perfect application letter for any job you wish to apply for.

  1. Review information about the company and position: An application letter is normally written to an advertisement or job vacancy. So when writing it, make reference to or review information about the job or position you are applying for, add information about the company, and compare your skills and experience to the list of skills required for the job.
  2. Use a professional format: Writing an application letter is an important task and should be done in a professional or formal manner. It is your first impression on the hiring manager. Avoid using contracted forms of words, and casual tonation. The alignment of the document should include single spacing, one-inch margins, and left alignment. It’s best to use a professional and traditional font, such as Times New Roman, in a size from 10 to 12 points. Try to keep your job application letter to one page, be concise and straight to the point.
  3. Create the heading: Use a formal business heading for your job application letter. The heading should include your name and contact information, the date and the company name and address. If you send your job application letter via email, you can eliminate your name and contact information from the header and put it at the bottom of the email after the signature instead.

    Example header:

    Your name
    Your physical address
    Your phone number
    Your email address

    Date

Name of hiring manager or supervisor
Title of hiring manager or supervisor
    Company name
    Company physical address

By including a professional and detailed heading, you can make it easier for the hiring manager to follow up with you regarding the position.

  4. Address the letter to the hiring manager: Another important thing to note is the fact that an application letter should be addressed to the Human resource or hiring manager unless otherwise specified in the job listing or advertisement. In your research, try to find the name of the person reviewing applications for the job. Address your letter to this person with a common business greeting, such as “Dear Mr./Ms.” and their last name.
  5. Open the letter by describing your interest: In the very first paragraph of your letter, make mention of the position you are applying for, why you are a good fit for that position and any experiences you have in relation to the position.
  6. Outline your experience and qualifications: The next few paragraphs of your letter should highlight your experience, qualifications, and skills, positioned in a way that aligns with the company’s goals and mission. Remember to tailor your experience and qualifications to the position you are seeking to fill, as your Curriculum vitae (CV) will outline your general experiences and qualifications.
  7. Include aspects of your personality: As you’re writing your job application letter, consider how you can incorporate aspects of your personality. A friendly and engaging letter is likely to appeal to the reader, especially when they can get an idea of how well you might fit with the team.
  8. Express appreciation: Express appreciation to the hiring manager for taking time off their busy schedule to review your letter, and considering you for the position.
  9. Close the letter: Many people use “Sincerely” or “Best” to close the letter, although any professional sign-off is fine to include. The final line of the letter should be your full name. If you submit a hard copy of the letter, include your signature above your typed name. When submitting an application letter via email, you should include your contact information beneath your name, rather than including it in the header.

How to create a website as a beginner, no coding skills required

Published

on

By

Gone are the days when one had to pay money for almost any IT related service or work. Today, the world has become a global village, and knowledge abounds on the internet or worldwide web.

In today’s’ world, you can practically sit in the comfort of your home and learn basically anything you want on the internet. Some experts are even of the view that in a few years to come, there might not be physical classrooms or schools, as they project that the future is a virtual one.

Youtube especially is one powerful tool or way through which you can learn to do stuff that would have required years of study in a school in the past.

Today, we are going to walk you through a step-by-step approach as a beginner on how to create your own website with no background or knowledge in coding or programming.

Many people would love to own or create their own websites but are scared to take the bold step due to the fact that they have no prior knowledge of ICT. Technology as we know makes life easier, and the invention of content management platforms like WordPress, Joomla, and Wix have made the creation of websites effortless and very easy.

For the purpose of this article, we will be focusing on WordPress, which of course is the most popular Content Management System (CMS) for websites.

Without wasting much time, let’s dig right in!

Things You Need In Order to Build a Website

Domain name, Website hosting, and WordPress.

  1. Domain name: A Domain name is the address of your website that people type in the browser URL bar to visit your website. In simple terms, if your website was a house, then your domain name will be its address. To register your domain name, you will need to find an accredited registrar and pay a fee. Accredited registrars are organizations who are authorized by auDA, the Australian domain name administrator, to provide services to people who want to register a new domain name, renew their existing domain name, or make changes to their domain name record. (Examples are Namecheap.com, Name.com etc) Remember to note when your domain name will need renewing so it doesn’t expire. Letting your domain name expire could leave your business vulnerable to cybercriminals.
  2. Website hosting: You will need to find a web hosting company to get your domain name on the internet. Most of the major internet service providers offer web hosting services. They can also provide you with multiple email addresses. Monthly fees for web hosting vary depending on how large your website is and how many visits you get. Examples are Namecheap.com, Bluehost.com, Hostinger.com etc
  3. WordPress Just about every website host has a 1-click install of WordPress. But if you have trouble finding it, contact support and they’ll be able to walk you through it. I personally recommend Namecheap has an easier way to install WordPress.

Point your domain to your host: You bought your domain using a domain registrar. You signed up for a hosting plan. You installed WordPress on your host. Now you’re going to connect all that stuff together by pointing your domain to your host. Then when people go to your domain, they’ll end up on your website. There are a few technical settings you need to apply.

This involves configuring a few nameserver settings on your domain registrar for your domain. Your host will give you the correct settings; you’re looking for their nameserver settings. If you get stuck, contact your host and they’ll give you all the info you need.

Once you have the nameserver info from your host, go into your domain registrar and configure those settings for the domain that you want to point at your site.

Install a WordPress theme:  WordPress uses themes to determine how your website looks. This makes it really easy to change how your site looks without having to rebuild your site from scratch. You can easily swap out your old theme for a new one. Your design will look completely different.

Add content to your website: Now the fun part — it’s time to create the individual pages of your site. You’ll do this within WordPress. WordPress has two types of content: pages and posts. Think of posts as blog posts that are published under a “blog” section of a site. If you’re not planning on having a blog, then you can skip posts entirely. Pages are the more permanent pages on your website. Like your About or Contact Us pages. When you’re first creating your website, you want to get a batch of pages live so your site feels real.

Every website has a few standard pages you should create: Homepage – Your WordPress theme usually has settings for this page. Contact Page – Create a new page and install a WordPress form plugin so you can add a form to the page. About page – Tell your story and why you’ve started your business. Product or services pages – For the main services or products that you’re offering, it’s a good idea to create a dedicated page for each.

These are basic steps to help you create your own website with WordPress, if you find any difficulty or hit a snag, just contact your hosting support or watch youtube video tutorials on the particular challenge you are facing.
