Made in Ghana, the Artificial Intelligence system known as Brilla AI is set to compete unofficially in the 2023 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) grand finale. Brilla AI, created by Kwame AI, will remotely compete with PRESEC-Legon, Achimota School, and Opoku Ware School in the riddles round on Monday, October 30, 2023.

Brilla AI is designed to provide quick and accurate answers to questions in a Ghanaian accent, and it incorporates four machine-learning systems in NLP, speech processing, and Generative AI, working together in real-time.
Dr. George Jojo Boateng, the head of the project, explained that the app transcribes the quiz moderator’s voice into text, extracts clues from the text, and forwards them to the question-answering feature. The AI then converts the answer into speech, responding in a Ghanaian accent. This project aims to explore the potential of AI in the national competition and education sector.
Beyond being an intellectual challenge, the project seeks to address inequities in NSMQ preparation and Ghana’s educational system. By democratizing NSMQ preparation through AI technology, it can enable more widespread access to science education in Ghana and, ultimately, across Africa.
The first version of Brilla AI was demonstrated at AfricAIED 2023 and launched on October 28, 2023.
Opoku Ware School in Kumasi, Achimota School in Accra, and Presbyterian Boys Senior High School are the qualified schools competing in the 2023 NSMQ final, which is set for Monday, October 30, 2023. President Akufo-Addo has been invited as the special guest of honor for the competition’s grand finale.
